When Do Men Need Treatment for Low Testosterone?
Low testosterone occurs when testosterone levels in the body are below 300 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL). The hormone is produced by the human body, and the production usually wanes with age. Testosterone influences a man’s sexual development and appearance and helps build muscle and bone mass. It also triggers sperm production and affects a man’s sex drive.
Statistics from the American Urological Association show that two of every 10 men above the age 60 have low testosterone. The number increases to three out of 10 when they are in their 70s and 80s.
Different symptoms can accompany testosterone reduction in the body. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the normal level is between 300-1000ng/dL. To detect the level of this hormone in your body, you may have to undergo a blood test called a serum testosterone test. When your testosterone levels fall below the normal line, then treatment is required. The following are signs you need to look out for:
Symptoms of low testosterone
Lower sex drive
Testosterone is a key player in men’s sex drive. Aging may cause a decline in sex drive for some. However, someone with low testosterone will probably experience a more significant drop in their cravings for sex.
Although testosterone is responsible for sex drive, it also helps to get and maintain an erection. Testosterone does not create the erection independently, but it triggers brain receptors to generate nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps to stimulate a couple of chemical reactions required for an erection. If the testosterone levels are diminished, a man may struggle with an erection before sex or getting spontaneous erections.
Testosterone is only a contributing factor to erection. There is not enough research to prove that testosterone treatment will help with erectile dysfunction. Often times, other health conditions may be responsible for this condition.
Reduced semen volume
Testosterone contributes to semen production, which is the milky fluid that enhances sperm motility. Men with low testosterone (low T) will usually discover a reduction in the volume of semen produced during ejaculation.
Hair production is one of the many body functions of testosterone. Although balding is a natural aspect of aging and often an inherited trait, men with low T may suffer hair loss on their head and body.
Men with low T may experience recurrent fatigue and lower energy levels. You may be dealing with low T if you feel weak and tired all the time, even with enough sleep.
Loss of bone and muscle mass
Since testosterone contributes to bone and muscle building, men with low T may experience a reduction in muscle mass and bone volume. It may not affect muscle functions, but it may make the bone more susceptible to fractures.
If you are experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, you should visit the doctor for a blood test and treatment if necessary. During your consultation, you will also learn about the potential advantages and risks of testosterone drugs.
