What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is a condition in which a man is not able to get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. Having erection trouble occasionally may not necessarily be a cause for concern. But if ED is an ongoing issue, it can affect someone’s self-esteem, cause stress and contribute to problems in a relationship. If you are concerned about ED, you should talk to your doctor.
Causes of erectile dysfunction
Male sexual arousal is considered to be a complex process. It involves the brain, emotions, hormones, blood vessels, nerves and muscles. ED can be due to a problem with any of these. Although people are more likely to develop ED as they age, aging does not cause it. Fortunately, erectile dysfunction can be treated at any age. Here are some of the factors that can cause or contribute to ED.
Diseases and conditions
Some diseases and conditions can lead to erectile dysfunction. These include type 2 diabetes, heart and blood vessel disease and chronic kidney disease. Other conditions include Peyronie’s disease or multiple sclerosis. It can also be due to surgery for bladder cancer or injury to the penis, bladder, prostate, spinal cord, pelvis or from prostate cancer treatments. Men who have diabetes are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction than men who do not have diabetes.
Psychological or emotional factors may end up making the condition worse. ED can occur because of one or more emotional or psychological issues. These include anxiety, depression, fear of sexual failure and low self-esteem. It can also be due to guilt about sexual performance or particular sexual activities. Stress is also another common cause of ED. This can be stress in a person’s life or about sexual performance.
Other risk factors
Certain risk factors can contribute to ED. These include smoking, using illegal drugs, drinking too much alcohol and being overweight. Tobacco use can restrict blood flow to arteries and veins and may over time cause chronic health problems that lead to ED. Erectile dysfunction can also be a side effect of several common medicines. These include blood pressure medicines, ulcer medicines, antidepressants and prescription sedatives. It is also linked to appetite suppressants or medicines that make people less hungry and antiandrogens.
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by particular diseases and conditions and emotional or psychological issues. Other risk factors also often lead to ED. In some cases, a combination of psychological and physical factors can cause ED. For example, a minor physical condition that slows someone’s sexual response may cause anxiety about maintaining an erection. The resulting anxiety may lead to ED or even worsen it.
Sometimes, problems keeping or getting an erection can be an indicator of an underlying health condition. A health care provider can treat the underlying cause of your condition. In many cases, treating an underlying condition can help reverse ED. In other situations, particular medications or other direct treatments might help. If you want to find out more about the causes of ED and how to prevent it, talk to your doctor.
