Testosterone therapy refers to prescription drugs that can be used to increase a man's testosterone levels. As men get older, it is natural for their testosterone levels to drop, and that often comes with symptoms like depression, muscle loss, constantly feeling tired and a lack of energy. Treat BPH Using Traditional and Alternative Therapies
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) can impact men as they get older. In this condition, the prostate becomes enlarged, resulting in a variety of uncomfortable side effects. These side effects can include trouble with urination and erectile dysfunction.
The most common symptoms of BPH have to do with urination. It is common for men to have a weak urine stream, which means they are unable to get a significant amount of urine out quickly. It is also common for men to start and stop urinating, instead of having a steady stream. Even after urination, men with BPH will often feel that their bladder is still full or is not empty.
While this condition may not seem serious, it is uncomfortable and incredibly inconvenient. Also, it can lead to other health problems such as kidney stones or even bladder infections. Thus, it is important to address this issue, rather than simply ignoring it.
How do I know if I have BPH?
The most common symptoms are:
- Dribbling after urinating
- Needing to urinate more at night
- Difficulty starting urination
- Feeling like the bladder cannot fully empty
What causes BPH?
The exact cause of an enlarged prostate is not entirely known. However, it typically impacts men as they age.
Why does an enlarged prostate cause problems with urination?
The prostate sits beneath the bladder. As it gets larger, the prostate places more pressure on the bladder. There is a tube that goes from the bladder to the penis to help pass the urine. To do so, the tube and urine must travel through the prostate.
An enlarged prostate essentially closes in around the tube, compressing it and interrupting/slowing the flow of urine. Think of it like closing a fist around a soft tube. The size of the tube would become smaller, making it difficult for anything to pass through.
What does BPH have to do with erectile dysfunction?
There is a correlation between an enlarged prostate and erectile dysfunction, though the exact linkage is still unclear. Also, some men suffer from dysfunction after taking medication to treat BPH. This can cause incredible amounts of frustration, especially for those who were already very frustrated by their difficulties urinating.
Alternative treatment options
It is important to visit a urologist for help with BPH, which is why we encourage scheduling an appointment with our office. We offer alternative treatments that extend beyond what a urologist would traditionally recommend. Therefore, our patients often see results by reducing the size of the prostate or causing the bladder to relax without the adverse symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
